Ganges Grandmasters Win GCL 2026 After Thrilling Final Against Pipers
Ganges Grandmasters secured their maiden Global Chess League title in Season 4, defeating defending champions APL Pipers 7-5 in the two-leg final. Ian Nepomniachtchi's victory over Magnus Carlsen proved decisive, while coach Adhiban Baskaran's calm leadership, team spirit and unusual fasting ritual became part of the team's title-winning story.

Ganges Grandmasters completed an unexpected title-winning campaign in the 2026 Global Chess League, defeating defending champions APL Pipers 7-5 on aggregate in the two-leg final in Bengaluru.
The final remained undecided until the last match. After the opening leg ended 3-3 with Ganges Grandmasters playing White, the second leg produced the decisive result that secured the team's first GCL championship.
Ian Nepomniachtchi delivered the key victory for Ganges Grandmasters by defeating Magnus Carlsen. Nepomniachtchi capitalised on a positional mistake by the five-time world champion and maintained control as Carlsen's position deteriorated.
The result ended the Pipers' hopes of defending their title and completed an impressive turnaround for a Ganges side that few observers had expected to finish at the top when the season began.
Adhiban Baskaran's unusual coaching debut
One of the central figures behind the team's campaign was Indian Grandmaster Adhiban Baskaran.
Baskaran clarified that he is not a full-time coach and usually works as a professional player. However, with no tournaments scheduled for him in September, he decided to join Ganges Grandmasters during the GCL.
The decision resulted in his first coaching assignment ending with a championship.
“I’m not a full-time coach, so I wanted to clarify. I am like a professional player,” Baskaran said. He added that he wanted to be part of something special and was proud to win the fourth season on his coaching debut.
His contribution extended beyond chess preparation. Baskaran helped create a relaxed atmosphere within the squad, using humour and nicknames to build team spirit during a campaign that began with two wins and two losses in the opening four matches.
'Greek Goddess' becomes a team favourite
One of Baskaran's nicknames became particularly popular during the tournament.

The nickname caught on with the team and spectators. Tsolakidou eventually delivered the victory that sealed the title against Koneru Humpy and was named Player of the Tournament, receiving a Jawa motorbike as her prize.
Baskaran said he had not expected the nickname to become so popular so quickly.
The coach who fasted when the team lost
Baskaran also adopted an unusual personal ritual during the tournament.
Following a defeat, he decided to skip meals until the team returned to winning ways. What began as a one-time superstition eventually became a five-day routine in which he avoided lunch.
Baskaran joked that he would also skip dinner if the team failed to win, although the team's subsequent victories meant he could at least have his evening meal.
By the end of the competition, he admitted that his stomach was feeling the effects of the ritual.
Dhoni's influence on Baskaran's calm approach
Baskaran's composed behaviour in the dugout was partly influenced by a message from his father.
After the team suffered a defeat early in the competition, his father encouraged him to emulate former India cricket captain MS Dhoni, whom Baskaran considers one of his role models.
Baskaran also wore jersey number seven, which he originally chose because of his admiration for football star Cristiano Ronaldo. The number also happens to be associated with Dhoni, creating an inside joke within the team.
Despite the comparisons, Baskaran credited the players rather than himself for the championship.
Aronian and Nepomniachtchi praise team atmosphere
Levon Aronian, whom Baskaran has admired since childhood, was another major reason he wanted to join the team.
Baskaran said he wanted the opportunity to understand how elite players prepare, manage psychology and work together. Aronian described him as friendly, calm and pleasant, adding that their families had known each other for years.
The team's chemistry was also highlighted by Aronian and Nepomniachtchi.
Aronian described the group as having relaxed egos and little rigid structure, with players constantly joking and interacting like a family.
Nepomniachtchi, who arrived in Bengaluru uncertain about his form after a difficult period, said the atmosphere inside the team surprised him positively. Despite differences in age and culture, he felt the players found common ground and maintained a healthy, humorous environment.
Ganges Grandmasters called themselves the 'funniest team'
The team's social-media activity also reflected its strong camaraderie. Players spent time together away from the chessboard, participating in activities including padel, golf and basketball.
For Baskaran, those interactions were an important part of the team's success.
He described Ganges Grandmasters as “the funniest team” and linked the relaxed environment to the strong team spirit that developed during the tournament.
The championship therefore became more than an upset victory. For Ganges Grandmasters, the GCL 2026 title was built around a group of players who developed a close bond, a coach making his debut, an unusual fasting ritual and a decisive performance from Nepomniachtchi when the title was on the line.
