Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Says AGI Has Arrived After OpenAI Astra Launch

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has declared that artificial general intelligence, or AGI, has arrived following OpenAI's launch of its latest frontier AI model, GPT-6 Astra.
Huang congratulated OpenAI on X and linked the company's progress to the rapid expansion of computing power. He also said another 400,000 Nvidia GPUs are expected to come online, signalling the scale of infrastructure being prepared for the next phase of AI development.
“From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years. AGI has arrived,” Huang wrote, while congratulating the OpenAI team.
The statement comes as the definition of AGI remains contested across the technology industry. AGI is generally used to describe AI systems capable of matching or exceeding human-level cognitive abilities across a broad range of tasks.
OpenAI presents Astra as a major AI advance
OpenAI introduced Astra last week as its most capable and aligned system to date. The company said the model is designed to handle complex professional tasks involving reasoning, analysis and decision-making.
OpenAI president Greg Brockman also described the launch as the beginning of an AGI era, suggesting Astra could eventually be viewed as a key point in the development of general-purpose artificial intelligence.
However, not everyone in the AI community agrees that the launch meets the threshold for AGI.
AI researcher and critic Gary Marcus has questioned Huang's declaration, describing the claim as premature. The disagreement reflects a broader debate over whether increasingly capable AI models should be labelled AGI simply because they perform well across a growing range of tasks.
Sam Altman has questioned the AGI label
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously taken a more cautious view of the term. In an interview on the Sources podcast, Altman described AGI as an ill-defined concept and questioned how useful the acronym is.
