WhatsApp is rolling out a new search shortcut for iPhone users that makes it easier to find older messages directly from a conversation.
The new WhatsApp search button appears when users scroll upwards through a chat to view older messages. Instead of opening the chat information page first, users can tap the shortcut and immediately start searching for a keyword or phrase.
The feature is being released gradually, so it may not be available on every iPhone account immediately.
Where is the new WhatsApp search button on iPhone?
In the version currently being rolled out, the shortcut appears at the top of the chat interface, just below the navigation bar.
It becomes visible when users scroll upwards through a conversation and disappears when they return to the latest messages.
The placement is different from the version spotted during testing in August. At that stage, the search shortcut appeared at the bottom of the screen. WhatsApp has since moved it to the top before the wider rollout.
How the new WhatsApp search shortcut works
The update does not introduce a new search system. Instead, it provides a quicker way to access WhatsApp's existing message-search feature.
Previously, iPhone users looking for an older message generally had to:

With the new shortcut, users can access search directly from the conversation.
After tapping the button, users can enter a search term and browse matching messages in the chat.
WhatsApp search shortcut also comes to Channels
The shortcut is not restricted to individual and group chats.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is also available in WhatsApp Channels as part of the rollout. The shortcut appears in a similar position while users browse older Channel updates.
This could make it easier to find specific information in Channels that publish frequent posts.
The shortcut currently covers:
Individual chats: Supported
Group chats: Supported
WhatsApp Channels: Supported
Why WhatsApp moved the button
The position of the search shortcut changed between its testing phase and the current rollout.
During the August testing, the button was placed at the bottom of the interface and appeared while users scrolled through older messages. The current implementation places it at the top, beneath the navigation bar.
The button remains contextual rather than permanently visible. It appears when users move through older parts of a conversation and disappears once they return to the latest messages.
WhatsApp search button rollout is gradual
The new shortcut is not available to every iPhone user yet.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is gradually enabling the feature for accounts and plans to expand availability over the coming weeks. As a result, updating to the latest version of WhatsApp does not necessarily mean the shortcut will immediately appear.
Users who cannot see the new button can continue using the existing search option through the chat information screen.
What iPhone users need to do
There is no separate setting that needs to be switched on.
Users can update WhatsApp through the App Store, open a conversation and scroll upwards to older messages. If the feature has been enabled for their account, the search shortcut should appear near the top of the screen below the navigation bar.
If it is missing, the account may not have received the feature yet.
The availability is being controlled through a gradual rollout, meaning two users with compatible versions of WhatsApp may see different features at the same time.
What changes with the new WhatsApp search button?
The update does not fundamentally change how WhatsApp searches messages. It mainly makes the existing feature easier to access.
Users are not getting a new search engine or a completely different search system. The main change is that the search entry point is now available directly inside the conversation.
For people who regularly search through long personal chats, work groups or frequently updated WhatsApp Channels, the shortcut can reduce the number of taps needed to find an older message.
