iPhone 18 Pro Max May Get Exclusive Variable Aperture Camera
A new leak suggests the iPhone 18 Pro Max could receive an exclusive variable-aperture camera, potentially creating a major difference from the smaller Pro model.

Apple could be preparing a notable camera difference between its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, according to a new leak.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is reportedly set to receive a variable-aperture camera system that may not be available on the smaller Pro model. If accurate, the move would represent a significant change in Apple’s approach to its two premium iPhone variants.
Variable aperture could set the Pro Max apart
The claim comes from leaker Ice Universe, who reportedly suggested on Weibo that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will exclusively feature a variable aperture.
A variable-aperture camera can physically adjust the amount of light reaching the image sensor. This gives photographers greater control over exposure and depth of field, a capability more commonly associated with dedicated cameras.
If Apple limits the feature to the Pro Max, buyers choosing the larger model could gain a camera advantage beyond the usual differences in screen size and battery capacity.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max expected to share key features
Despite the reported camera difference, the two iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to remain closely matched in several areas.
Rumours point to both devices featuring Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip, a 48-megapixel triple-camera system, 12GB of memory and storage options potentially reaching 2TB.
That would make the variable-aperture camera one of the most important hardware distinctions between the two premium models.
Apple has used Pro Max camera exclusives before
The possibility is not entirely unprecedented.
Apple previously reserved its 5x telephoto camera for the iPhone 15 Pro Max before eventually bringing comparable technology to the smaller Pro model.
